SUMMER CAMP CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

SEWING IS FUN!
Limit: 5 students
Ages 7-18yrs
Date: July 25-29
Time: 10am-1pm
Fee: $180 per student

Returning Students can make whatever they want on the project list.
New students have a required first project (a pillow) before choosing from the project list.

This camp is designed to give students a relaxed and creative experience with sewing. There are a variety of projects to choose from and students learn right away how to use a sewing machine. All supplies, machines and notions are included except for fabric and the project list gives you all the info you need for these purchases. We do have a stash of fabric at Oak Hill but I like to reserve most of this to cover “I forgot my fabric” or other surprise/misc. moments. This class is will be messy and clothes might get permanently stained so students should dress accordingly. Also, there will be days we will be using lots of water so an extra shirt or shorts might come in handy.

QUILT CAMP......Log Cabin Quilt
Limit: 8 students
Ages 7-18yrs
Date: July 25-29
Time: 3pm-6pm
Fee: $180.00 plus supply fee of $65.00

    Requirements:
Previous Sewing Is Fun after school classes or Sew Happy classes
New students: must be enrolled in the morning Sewing Is Fun Camp
Students with previous other experience must have teacher approval

Special Note: any returning quilt camp student can choose to make a different quilt pattern – check with Celeste about this – there is no additional cost unless you want to go bigger but your fabric might have to be sorted differently from the Log Cabin project.

The project for this class is the classic Log Cabin quilt…and yes, it can be finished in one week…and yes, even by 7 yr olds!  The quilt is lap size, approximately 48” x 58”. The supply fee covers the entire cost for making this project: all the fabric including the back, the batting, thread and anything else that comes up.

Students will be asked to choose a favorite solid color, and then in class there will be a variety of cheerful prints that students can pick from to make up the rest of the quilt top. The back fabric will be the chosen solid color. Warning – once the solid fabric color is chosen and I have purchased the fabric, students cannot change their minds unless parents want to pay an additional fee for the new color choice – there will be no credit, refund or exchange applied from the original supply

FIBER ARTS CAMP
Limit: 5 students
Ages 7-18yrs
Date: Aug 15-19 or Aug 22-26
Time: 12noon-6pm
Fee: $360 per student plus supply fee $50.00

This is the class I have been wanting to offer for years - now I finally have the facilities to offer the class. Hooray for Oak Hill!

Students will experience spinning, weaving, knitting, sewing, basketry and just about every other type of fiber art we can squeeze in. The plan is to evolve the class in a loose historical timeline of fiber related crafts: starting with using plant fibers and going all the way up to age appropriate digital and online resources available today (yes, there really is an app for this!)

Just a few of the planned projects:

basket making by hunting and gathering out in “woods” of Oak Hill
natural dyeing possibilities (like juices from pickles, beets)
fabric painting using both natural and commercial coloring tools
making their own drop spindle and spinning yarn that they will felt into fabric
repurposing, reusing and recycling from old clothes, etc
       …and more!

There will also be guest speakers coming during the week to give a short presentation of their work and specialty skills. The speakers are all from Eugene and most of them are working artists in their field. I will have a list of the speakers and brief bios online at celestialfiberarts.com.

      Guest Speakers (so far)
Miriam Pike: specializes in sewing and knitting historically accurate garments and accesscories of the medivel period. She is also an accomplished weaver and spinner.
Eugen Beugler: is known as “ the master of the lace universe.” For our class he will be demonstrating the art of tatting and also show some of his lace masterpieces. And I hope is demo will also show that men also do fiber art!
Janis Thompson: owner and working artist of Dyelots! Janis’ is a spinning expert who will show and demo on the use of the spinning wheel.
Karen Kahle: owner and designer of Primitive Spirit Rugs. She will demo rug hooking and show some of her wonderful rugs.
